The Highway Authorities routinely monitor road collision records to help identify trends where engineering improvements may be beneficial. Examples of engineering improvements include localised road/junction realignment, improved lighting or changes to signing and lining arrangements.
Forward engineering programmes are developed by looking at which schemes could potentially reduce collisions, and where there is funding available. Funding for engineering improvements mainly comes from the annual government grant and contributions secured from private developers through the local planning process.
Provision can also be made for road safety schemes in places where local communities have significant concerns.
